The DreamHost Private Server Promotion
About 1.5 months ago, I moved another blog of mine from LunarPages to DreamHost due to CPU usage issue. I know changing from shared hosting to VPS (Virtual private Server) would be a more reliable solution. But I just didn’t want to pay the extra cost until I got the latest promotion from Dreamhost PS.
2 weeks ago, I received an email from DreamHost to persuade me to upgrade to their DreamHost Private Server products. But the price was not so attractive: 15$/month for 150M RAM plus the cost for shared hosting. As SWVPS offers a VPS with 400M RAM for 10$/month, what offered by DreamHost doesn’t sound cost efficient. Moreover, the MySQL PS will cost another 15$/month, it means moving to Lunarpages VPS would cost more or less the same but with much more RAM (512M). So I just ignored that email.
Then one week later, I received another email from DreamHost with a reduction of 33% for their PS products. Well, 10$/month extra for 150M guaranteed RAM was still not an offer good enough to me. So I didn’t react on it yet.
Finally, they sent me the third email with a reduction of 66% and they said it would be the final deal. OK, 5$/month for my own PROTECTED system resources seems to be a real promotion now. Then I spent some time to check reviews of DreamHost PS from other users to see whether it fits my need:
- promotion is only valid for one DreamHost PS product, so for users who also need DreamHost MySQL PS, the price will be 5$+15$-20%(discount for purchasing more than 1 product at once)=16$/month;
- MySQL PS is necessary for for users, for example owners of forums, having a lot of database access. For users having blogs based on WordPress, like myself, can use plugins, such as WP Super Cache, to reduce the access to database.
- DreamHost PS is something between shared host and common VPS as the root access is not provided. But for users like me, who don´t want to bother themselves with the server management, the control panel of DreamHost PS is easy to use, which is a big plus to me.
As summary, since I am tired of CPU usage problem with LunarPages and I want to avoid to have it again with DreamHost, I will take the offer to have my own protected system resources for extra 5$/month. Because MySQL usage is not a big issue for me, I will not go for DreamHost MySQL PS. For users who are more professional, VPS products offered by SWVPS may be a better choice. A remind to users who also want to try DreamHost Private Server products, maybe you should also wait until they make the final promotion :)
