Is BetaMax VoIP really cheap? True effective rate of Nonoh
Since 2006, I became customer of BetaMax, which is famous for introducing a new brand of VoIP service with low calling rate every a few months. I tried, as a subscriber, various VoIP products (including VoIPDiscount, VoIPBuster Pro, JustVoIP, Nonoh, Telbo and maybe one or two brands I have forgotten) from BetaMax. I also tried, also as subscriber, many VoIP products from other companies including Skype, Jajah, Vyke, Globe and etc. At the end, Nonoh remains as my daily VoIP service provider.
BetaMax VoIP services are well known for their “free days” policy, which links to another so called “Fair Use Policy”. Together with the billing problem and the notorious customer support, FUP makes BetaMax hated by many users of their services. Despite these facts, BetaMax is still considered as one of the VoIP providers with lowest calling rate. But is it really cheap or a trap to fool customer? Let’s a look on some calculations based on my usage of Nonoh.
Theoretically, users of Nonoh can have 120 “free days” after recharging their account with at least 10 euro. It will be 12.5 euro including tax and administration fee. According to the FUP of Nonoh, users can make 200 minutes free calls over 7 days. It means users can have 3428 free minutes with 120 “free days”. Take the normal rate as 1 cent/minute, the maximum minutes is 4428 for 12.5 euro. Thus theoretically, the effective rate of Nonoh is 0.28 cent/minute.
However, in reality this optimized situation is not likely to happen. During period one, I recharged my Nonoh account twice and made 39 hours and 23 minutes call (275 times) in about 120 days, it means the effective rate during that period is about 1.06 cent/minute. During period two, I recharged my Nonoh account twice and made 58 hours and 5 minutes call (351 times) in about 268 days, it means the effective rate during that period is about 0.72 cent/minute. In both cases, the effective rate is much higher than the optimized rate. There seems to be two reasons: first, if users call too much or too little makes they have less free minutes to use for every recharge; second, it looks like 200 free minutes over 7 days in FUP is the number for PC/SIP to phone calls, it will be only half for phone to phone calls.
Though comparing with the optimized rate the effective rate of Nonoh is not so cheap. But look at the rate of Skype of Google Voice, it still relative low.
