Invitation of Google Wave Preview and PageRank
When I saw the introduction demo of Google Wave for the first time, I was really impressed. So I went to the sign-up page of Google Wave to apply an invitation. But several days later, I calmed down from excitement and can consider more about what Google Wave means.
I used Live Meeting from Microsoft quite often in recent a few weeks. I felt that Google Wave could be a better replacement of Live Meeting. BTW, compare the reaction from people of Google Wave and Microsoft Windows Phone platform, it could be the reflection of innovation level of these two companies.
But at this stage, Google Wave is not really usable in serious application. According what I have read, It consumes too much resources and the speed is slow. Maybe Google Wave is the first web applications that needs so much resources. Meanwhile, features of Google Wave are not finalized yet, and the security control is very poor (everyone can change input of others). It means Google Wave could only be used as a kind of chat room at this moment.
However this is what people can be expected from previews. Google Wave will be improved in the further. What I am interested in here is the way how invitation of Google Wave works. It is not like how invitation of previous Google Products works. In fact, people have gotten invitation cannot invite friends directly. What they could do is to nominate their friends. Who get most nomination will receive new invitations.
When Gmail just came out, the invitation mechanism of it was not only a promoting but also the way to build up a map of relationship among people, many observers believed, I also think it make sense. But this kind map of relationship is quite simple. It could only show links of people but not the active level of these relationships.
On the other hand, PageRank is one of famous inventions of Google. In general, Google calculates the PageRank of web pages based on links pointing to these pages. And PageRank is one of the key facts for Google to determine the importance of a web pages and to organize their web search results of a specified term.
Now look back at the invitation, or nomination to make it more precise, mechanism of Google Wave, we can find their similarity: the more nominations received by a person, the more active he/she like to be in relationships with other people. Of course, this method is still not accurate enough to illustrate relationships among people, but it will be a big improvement comparing with single track links indicated by the original invitation mechanism. Moreover, as I have already mentioned, Google Wave seems to be an ideal tool for meeting, chat room or organizing events. As it looks like people are more active in relationships with other will receive invitation of Google Wave, they are more likely to be organizers or participators of meetings/chat rooms/events.
