Fring released iPhone/iPod Touch version that supporting free Skype video calls
As I predicted one weeks ago, iPhone/iPod version became the next platform for Fring to support free Skype video calls after Symbian S60 smartphones. Due to the fact that iPhone doesn’t have front camera (iPod Touch even has no camera at all), users can only receive videos for their Skype buddies on PC or Fring buddies on Nokia S60 smartphones but not have their own videos displayed on another side.
Since I don’t have iPhone (though I am planning to get an iPod Touch), I could not test it. But I have already tested the Skype video call feature of Fring on my Nokia N82. The video quality looks quite nice while it is even better on iPhone according to the demo on Youtube as the video takes more screen space on iPhone than on Nokia N97 or 5800.
What impressed me the most is that video call on Fring only uses data bandwidth around 20kB/s for bi-directions. It is about 7 times more than the bandwidth usage of pure voice call on Fring. So the data traffic of one minutes video call on Fring is about 1.2MB. In fact, even EDGE is sufficient for the video call feature of Fring though it only support 3G or WiFi. Many people may consider that the data bandwidth usage is not an issue with WiFi or unlimited data plan. But in fact, this is also a matter of battery consumption, because the more data is transmitted the more power is used.
The release of Fring iPhone/iPod Touch version that supporting free Skype video calls strengthens its leading position as the best mobile VoIP/IM software for smartphones.
