TiViPhone, another mobile IM software supporting video call for free

Though very few mobile IM software support video call, OctroTalk is not the only choice. After spending more time to search on internet, I found another mobile IM client that can be used for video chat. It is called TiviPhone.

TiviPhone is also not so well known and it seems that the developer didn’t put to much effort on the UI design, which also happens to OctroTalk. The reason may be both of them are not targeting to common users. A difference between TiviPhone and OctroTalk is that, TiviPhone is a purely based on SIP and it doesn’t support any other IM networks. It appears that TiviPhone also doesn’t support file transfer. It is only supposed to be for text chat, voice and video calls.

The video size on the mobile phone’s screen of TiviPhone should be more or less the same as OctroTalk. But it looks smaller and TiviPhone doesn’t provide option to adjust video quality. Moreover, TiviPhone doesn’t support video call over EDGE. I didn’t try it over 3G connection though it worked fine with WiFi.

TiviPhone also use much more battery than OctroTalk in standby mode. For example, if I keep TiviPhone running on my Nokia N82, it can standby for only about 18 hours while with OctroTalk it can standby for about 54 hours.

Though concerning performance, TiviPhone is not as good as OctroTalk, but it is free to use. Users only have to purchase license key to change the SIP server. However, you still can temperately change the SIP server to which one you prefer to make call to normal phones. The limitation is that users will lost the change when they restart the program. BTW, the voice quality of TiviPhone while calling normal phones is quite good over EDGE, though there is some delay.
