imichat, a mobile IM software supporting video chat room
Video call feature of OctroTalk and TiviPhone makes them outstanding among so many mobile IM software. However, there is another mobile IM software from China called imichat making a step further. It not only provides the video call feature but also the video chat room.
imichat supports text, voice and video chat even over GPRS. Its most features are free to use. Payment is only necessary to get in some chat rooms, which may be only for adults. When your friend is also registered user of imichat, you can make video call to him/her to him in imichat and his/her mobile, which also has imichat installed, will ring as if there is a real call. When the call is connected, the video chat UI will be displayed. The remote video will be displayed on the left of the mobile phone screen and the local video is on the right. Users can increase/decrease the size of video with left/right navigation key. There is also a video quality option to switch between smooth and better quality mode according to the network condition. Text and voice messages can be sent during video chat. The voice chat is working in push and talk mode, which is the same in Contact on Ovi.
There are text chat rooms and video chat rooms on imichat. There is not too much to say about text chat rooms. Owners of video chat rooms are always young girls and many users doubt videos of those girls are pre-recorded. And there are often dirty talks in those chat room. Dating is the major pay feature of imichat what can be expected.
The data traffic of imichat video chat for 5 minutes is only about 420kB, which is extremely low. But the consequence is that the video quality of imichat is much lower than OctroTalk and TiviPhone. Moreover the protocol of imichat is property and it doesn’t support popular IM networks like MSN, Yahoo, GTalk and so on. Another problem is that users are often annoyed by video chat invitation or SMS from other imichat subscriber after they has registered on imichat. But I guess it is less serious for users outside China since international SMS is much more expensive
