Pros and cons, review of Nimbuzz

Nimbuzz is my backup choice of Mobile IM program after Fring. In fact, I started to use Nimbuzz even before Fring, since the initial version of Nimbuzz was based on Java ME and when I was still using my Motorola E680i, Fring didn’t has J2ME version yet.  Though Nimbuzz has a shorter history than Fring especially on smartphones, it developed very quickly and make itself a serious competitor of Fring. Here is a brief summary of Nimbuzz’s advantage and disadvantage below

Pros:

1. Nimbuzz also supports most popular IM networks including MSN, Yahoo, GTalk, Skype, SIP, AIM/ICQ, Twitter, Facebook and so on that even more than Fring, for example, MySpace as well as some not common names like Hyves and Gadu-Gadu.

2. The voice quality of Nimbuzz mobile VoIP is clearer and having less delay than Fring if the bandwidth is enough, let’s say with WiFi connection.

3. It supports to send text and voice message to offline Nimbuzz users.

4. Nimbuzz supports chat rooms, which is not available on Fring.

5. It supports any kind of file transfer and has option to send images just as to send normal MMS.

Cons:

1. Requirement of bandwidth for Nimbuzz’s VoIP feature is about 3 times higher than Fring, which makes it less usable on GPRS/EDGE.

2. The UI of Nimbuzz is not well considered in some aspects. For example, users have to choose to use cellular, SIP or Skypout to make call to normal phones in general settings and cannot change it on-fly for different numbers.

3. Nimbuzz consume much more battery (about 10 times higher) than Fring when keeping online over EDGE in standby mode.
